This is some storyboarding work I've done for my cousin. Very fun to do these simple illustrations.

Drawing for Illustration

I've been taking some illustration classes this semester at UVU, and they've been a lot of FUN. These are some of my assignments for the Drawing for Illustration class. I thought this class was very helpful, and I even learned some new principles of perspective drawing. The number one thing I learned from this class was to keep deadlines. It was challenging to keep up with the assignments.

The semester is almost over, and I'm pretty excited for the summer semester. I'm taking a digital painting class. So, that'll be fun.

Thanks for looking.

He lost his stuffing

A painting I did today for my sister-in-law for her birthday. Maybe I'll do some more of these Wizard of Oz characters in the future. This was fun.

And in other news I was recently accepted in to the UVU illustration BFA program. I'm pretty excited about it. :D

I'm also excited for the semester to be over. :D

First sketch of March

I'm just on a Doug Chiang thing right now. It's so fun doing these free form gray marker sketches. The fun part is going back over it with the black fine pen to figure out what the form is going to be.

This, I would say is some sort of public works transport. The huge guns in front are there to deal with the out of control cat problem in this society. :)

Creature Design Workshop

I have to geek out for a minute. I went to a creature design workshop with Terryl Whitlatch today. It was sponsored by the UVU Illustration club. It was awesome!

She talked about many aspects of creature design. One of the things she talked about was looking at LOTS of references of real animals. She said once you understand the anatomy of real animals then you can start designing your own creatures.

So this is my study from the reference using prismacolor markers.

and then this is my attempt at creature design. She made it look a lot easier than it is. This is my tiger/shark.

It was the best $5 I've spent. I have to thank the Illustration Club for putting this together.

And on a side note, she was kind enough to sign my The Art of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. This book in my opinion is rad. It's one of my favorite books to look at for inspiration (plus, it Star Wars).
Now, I will get off my nerd box. Thanks.

I found my notes from this. So I thought I would post them here. They are not great. here they are:

Notes for the Terryl Whitlatch creature design lecture.
  • ·      Love and appreciate animals. After that, you can draw them really well.
  • ·      She does a lot of lateral orthographic. She calls them Di Vinci’s
  • ·      She does a lot of narrative illustrations
  • ·      She uses copics markers for some of her sketching
  • ·      When you are doing concept art imagine your self as that creature
  • ·      Doug Chiang is the nicest person she’s ever meet
  • ·      If you want to work for the movies, you have to know the basics of drawing.
  • ·      She’s working with Jack Horner currently as a paleo-reconstructionist.

Notes for the Terryl Whitlatch creature design works shop.

  • Creature design is hard work
  •
  • Do lots Quick thumbnails before starting your actual drawing
  •
  • Look at References LOTs of references

  • If you want to design a fast animal: look at the horse or the gray hound. They are running machines
  • Use Warm and cool gray copics markers
  • Pencil sketch on tracing paper over your original design to show muscles and bones.

Sketchbook Rhino

30% cool gray Prismacolor first, then a Zebra ballpoint pen on after. And then I go back over it with darker values. I'm practicing the techniques described in this book:

Doug Chiang is AWESOME!

Oh! I have a blog

So, school started up again. Thats why I havent posted in while. I'm finally taking some awesome art classes. One of them is  an acrylic painting class and I'm very much enjoying it! Above are a couple examples of how the assignments are turning out. Painting 4-6x8 paintings a week is enjoyable. I've never used acrylic paints before so it's challenging.

And then some sketchbook goodness. Enjoy!

I'm really loving the prismacolor gray value markers. Enjoy!

Two things I like

This is just one example that shows what really matters most in my life at the age of 4 and half. Drawing, and a 9 piece Chicken McNugget. Nothing has changed.
I was really into drawing cartoon birds, turtles, and elephants.
Now back to non-art related homework. :(

Mascot Bowl 2012 and a Monster

I did a really quick one for the Mascot Bowl this year. It has also been published on the Utah Jazz official website. I thought it turned out Ok. I left a lot of space for the mascots to add their John Hancocks.
Here are some screen shots from the website as well

That's SO cool!

Also, a new commission for a sports logo. It's for a batting cage instructor. Here are the rough idea sketches.

And the possible final. There might be some changes. This was done in adobe Illustrator.

Enjoy!

Moving on

This is what I've been doing since the last time I posted.
Just one new sketchbook drawing since last time. And the 3rd Batman movie was pretty good too.

A cartoon version of my brother Paul. He really likes the Seth MacFarlane cartoons.

A paint over of teeth. Look Mom no braces!

The last assignment in my design class this semester. Good bye SLCC!!!!! :)

I no longer work full time. Good bye Library. It was fun, but time to move on.

And starting tomorrow I will be going to Utah Valley University full time.  I'm going to study illustration. I'm pretty excited, because I'm half way done! It's taken a lot of hard work to get to this point. :D

Sketch book # 2

These are the most recent sketches that I've done in my sketch book. For some reason they have been turning out a lot better lately. The top one is a VW Bug. It's kind of a mix between the car in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cars.
The next one is of Freddie Mercury. My wife and I watched a Youtube video of him performing at Wembley stadium in 1985. It's one entertaining video. If you like the sound of Queen and messed up teeth, watch this video.
Lately, I've been taking pictures with my phone and then drawing them. It's a lot of fun! I'll probably do more. The last two are of my wife and her brother’s new baby. And the other one is my nephew. He loves The Amazing Spider-man.

sketches

I bought a much better sketchbook a couple of months ago. It is great! It's nothing like the crappy one I bought from the community college. Here are most of what I have in there now. These are from May and June. I'm trying out the white gel pen for highlights. I think I might have gone overboard with it already, but I'm still trying it out. I got the idea for the different sketchbook and the gel pen from Kevin Keele's blog. He is an amazing artist! His drawing skill level is far beyond mine and his sketching style is very inspiring to me, as you can see here.
Since this is a new sketchbook I wanted to have some specific goals with it. Some of the goals are:
  • No floating heads
  • No incomplete drawings
  • Commit to one drawing at a time
  • Date the drawing when finished
  • A lot more figure drawing from life
